Wall Cladding Dubai: The Feature Wall That Changed My Living Room

My living room wall was plain beige paint, and it looked boring. I decided to install wall cladding using 3D PVC panels. The transformation was instant. The textured surface adds depth, and it is very easy to clean. I chose a white matte finish that reflects light and makes the room look bigger. In this article, I will cover the different types of wall cladding (PVC, wood, stone, upholstered), how to install them, and their pros and cons for Dubai homes.

Types of Wall Cladding

PVC panels are cheap, lightweight, and easy to install. They come in wood grain, stone, or 3D geometric patterns. I installed PVC panels in my living room myself using construction adhesive. The job took one day. Five years later, they still look new. Wood panels are more expensive but look more natural. I used reclaimed wood planks in my home office. I nailed them to furring strips attached to the wall. The result is warm and rustic. However, wood panels need sealing and can warp in humidity. My reclaimed wood developed a few gaps after the first summer. I filled them with wood filler and resealed. Wall board panels made of PVC are moisture-resistant, perfect for Dubai's humidity. For a more natural look, wooden room divider dubai panels as wall cladding create a rustic feel. Stone or brick cladding is the most expensive and heaviest. I used fake stone veneer on a feature wall in the dining room. The veneer is made from polyurethane and looks very realistic. It is lightweight and easy to install. The downside is that dust settles in the crevices and is hard to clean. I use a soft brush attachment on my vacuum.

Upholstered Wall Panels for Acoustics

I also saw a friend's upholstered wall panels in his home theater, and the acoustic benefits are amazing. Upholstered panels are fabric-wrapped foam. They are soft and absorb sound. My friend's home theater is whisper-quiet. The downside is that fabric can stain and is hard to clean. He chose a dark gray performance fabric that resists stains. He also installed them only behind the seating area, not near the kitchen. The panels are 5cm thick and reduce echo significantly. He said the cost was 3000 dirhams for a 4x2 meter wall. That is expensive but effective. For a home office, a single upholstered panel behind your desk can reduce echo on video calls. I did that. It cost 500 dirhams for a 1.5x1 meter panel. My voice sounds much clearer.

Installation Tips

Installation of wall cladding varies. PVC and veneer panels can be glued directly to the wall with construction adhesive. Wood and upholstered panels need a backing or furring strips. Always check that your wall is flat and clean before starting. I learned that when I tried to glue PVC panels to a textured wall. They did not stick well. I had to sand the wall smooth first. For concrete walls, use a masonry bit to drill holes for anchors. For drywall, use drywall anchors or screw into studs. For high-gloss panels, use a level and spacer to keep lines straight. I also recommend using a panel cutter or a fine-tooth saw. A regular wood saw will chip the edges. I bought a special PVC saw for 50 dirhams. It made clean cuts.

Cost

Cost ranges from 50 dirhams per square meter for basic PVC to 500 dirhams for real wood or stone. My living room feature wall is 10 square meters and cost 800 dirhams including adhesive. That is very affordable for the impact it makes. The stone veneer wall in the dining room cost 2000 dirhams for 5 square meters (400 per sqm). The wood plank wall in the office cost 1200 dirhams for 4 square meters (300 per sqm). The upholstered panel was 500 dirhams for 1.5 square meters (330 per sqm). So PVC is the cheapest by far. It also looks very modern. I recommend it for renters because it is easy to remove.

Removable Options for Renters

If you are renting, consider removable wall cladding. Some PVC panels are designed to be attached with double-sided tape or removable adhesive. They come off without damaging the paint. I used those in a rental apartment, and I got my full deposit back. For a permanent home, glue-down panels are better. The removable tape is 3M VHB. It is strong but can be removed with a heat gun and fishing line. I tested it on a small area. The paint came off clean. The panels can be reused if you are careful. I stored them flat for my next apartment.

Design Ideas

Wall cladding can be used for an accent wall behind the TV, behind the bed (as a headboard), or in a hallway. I used a 3D wave pattern in my living room. The waves catch light and create shadows. It is very dramatic. In the bedroom, I used a vertical slat wood panel. It makes the ceiling look higher. In the office, I used a combination of upholstered panel (for acoustics) and a small PVC panel for decoration. For a bathroom, use PVC only. Wood will warp. Stone will be too heavy and expensive. PVC is waterproof and easy to clean. I installed PVC panels behind the bathtub. They have lasted three years with no mold. I just wipe them with a squeegee after showers.

Maintenance

PVC panels need dusting weekly. Use a soft cloth. For deeper cleaning, use mild soap and water. Do not use abrasive cleaners. They will scratch the gloss. Wood panels need occasional oiling or waxing. I use a wood wax every six months. Stone veneer needs dusting with a soft brush. Upholstered panels need vacuuming with a soft brush. I also use a fabric steamer to remove wrinkles. The steamer also kills dust mites. Overall, wall cladding is low maintenance compared to painted walls. Painted walls show every fingerprint and scuff. Cladding hides them.

Final Advice

Always order extra panels. I had to cut around electrical outlets and windows, and I made a few mistakes. Having extra saved me. Also, wear gloves. Some adhesives are messy. Wall cladding is one of the easiest and most impactful DIY projects you can do. It turned my boring living room into a space that guests compliment every time. My only regret is not doing it sooner. If you are intimidated, start with a small wall, like the one behind your toilet or behind your desk. You will gain confidence. And remember, wall cladding can also be used outdoors. I used stone veneer on an exterior garden wall. It looks like a real stone wall but is much lighter. It has survived two summers. No fading or cracking.
