Laminate Flooring Dubai: What They Don't Tell You Before You Install
I thought laminate flooring would be a cheap and easy alternative to tiles. I was wrong. I installed laminate flooring dubai in my bedroom, and within a year, the edges had swollen near the balcony door where moisture crept in. I learned that standard laminate is not suitable for Dubai's occasional humidity spikes. You need high-density water-resistant laminate with sealed joints. In this guide, I will share my mistakes, the right way to choose and install laminate, and when to avoid it altogether.
The Expansion Gap Is Critical
Laminate expands and contracts with temperature and humidity. You need to leave a 10mm gap around the edges, covered by baseboards. I left only 5mm, and my floor buckled. The gap must be consistent and unobstructed. Do not let the baseboards press tightly against the planks. Also, the room should be acclimated before installation. Leave the laminate boxes in the room for 48 hours. I did not do that the first time. The planks were cold from storage. After installation, they warmed up and expanded. The floor lifted in the middle. I had to remove the baseboards and cut the edge planks to create more gap. That was a messy job.
Underlayment Matters
A good moisture barrier underlayment is essential. I used a cheap foam underlayment that did not block moisture. The second time, I used a rubber underlayment with a built-in vapor barrier. It cost more but solved the problem. The underlayment also provides acoustic insulation. Laminate can sound hollow when you walk on it. A thick underlayment reduces that noise. I also added a plastic vapor barrier sheet (6 mil polyethylene) over the concrete subfloor before the underlayment. Concrete in Dubai can wick moisture from the ground. Even if it looks dry, there is vapor. The plastic sheet stops it. That is a must for ground floor apartments.
UV Resistance and Fading
Direct sunlight fades laminate. My bedroom gets morning sun, and the area near the window faded noticeably after one summer. Choose laminate with high UV resistance or use curtains. I added UV-blocking film to my windows, which helped but did not completely prevent fading. The fading is irreversible. The only solution is to rotate the rug. I put a rug over the faded area. In the second installation, I chose a laminate with a higher UV rating (AC5, which is commercial grade). It has faded less. The color is also a lighter oak, so fading is less visible. Dark colors fade more dramatically.
Waterproof vs. Water-Resistant
Laminate is not waterproof. Spills need to be wiped immediately. I once left a wet towel on the floor overnight, and it left a white ring. For wet areas like kitchens, stick to tiles or vinyl flooring dragon mart. Vinyl flooring is completely waterproof and comes in planks or sheets. I used vinyl in my laundry room, and it has held up perfectly. Vinyl is also warmer underfoot and quieter. The downside is that vinyl can dent. I dropped a heavy can on it and left a mark. Laminate is harder and more scratch-resistant. So for living rooms with high traffic, laminate is better. For bathrooms and kitchens, vinyl or tile.
AC Ratings and Thickness
When choosing laminate, look at the AC rating. AC3 is for residential use. AC4 is for light commercial. AC5 is for heavy commercial. For Dubai, go with AC4 or AC5 because the climate is harsh. Also look at the thickness. 8mm is the minimum. 10mm or 12mm feels more solid. I chose 12mm with a built-in underlayment pad. The cost was higher, but the floor feels much better. The thicker planks also have deeper embossing, which looks more like real wood. I also recommend planks with a beveled edge. The bevel hides small gaps if the floor shifts. My first laminate had square edges. Every gap was visible. The beveled edges are much more forgiving.
Installation Tips
I installed my second laminate myself. I bought a laminate cutter (150 dirhams) instead of using a saw. The cutter is quiet and dust-free. It works like a guillotine. For straight cuts, it is perfect. For curved cuts (around door frames), I used a jigsaw. I also used a tapping block and a pull bar to tighten the planks. The installation of a 20 sqm room took one day. I worked alone. The hardest part was cutting around the door frame. I had to undercut the frame with a handsaw. The second hardest was the last row. You need to measure and cut lengthwise. A table saw is best, but I used a circular saw with a guide. It was messy but doable.
Acclimation Revisited
I cannot stress this enough: acclimate the laminate. I left the boxes in the room for 48 hours. The room temperature was 24°C. The laminate reached equilibrium. Then I installed. After installation, I left the floor alone for another 24 hours before moving furniture. No issues. Some people recommend 72 hours. I think 48 is fine. Also, do not install laminate in a room with high humidity (above 70%). Wait for a dry day. In Dubai, that is easy except in summer. I installed in November.
Carpet as an Alternative for Bedrooms
For a softer feel, carpet installation in bedrooms is still a good option if you choose UV-stabilized fibers. Carpet is warm and quiet. It hides dust better than hard floors. However, carpet traps allergens and requires professional cleaning. I have carpet in my master bedroom and laminate in the guest bedroom. Both have pros and cons. The carpet is softer for walking barefoot. The laminate is easier to clean (just sweep and mop). For children's rooms, carpet is safer when they fall. For pets, laminate is better because it does not trap fur. I have a dog. The laminate is easier to vacuum.
Final Verdict
Laminate is not the best flooring for Dubai, but if you are on a budget and choose wisely, it can work. Just avoid it in bathrooms, kitchens, and laundry rooms. Keep it in bedrooms and living rooms with low moisture. And never, ever use it on a balcony or near a pool. My second laminate floor has now lasted two years without issues. It was a lot of trial and error, but I got there. For a worry-free floor, I still recommend porcelain tiles. But if you love the look of wood and cannot afford engineered wood, laminate is acceptable. Just follow the rules: high AC rating, proper underlayment, acclimation, and expansion gap. And buy a few extra boxes for future repairs.
